Hula Hoop
Required: 2 balls, 2-3 hula hoops, dice
Icons:
Star: Starting space OR Choose a spot on the board
+50: Add 50 points to the team that landed on the spot
Hula Hoop: Game (Teachers choice)
Thief: Steal all points from the other team
Typhoon: Erase all points from both teams
Switch Arrows: Switch points of the teams or switch a player from each team
Roll the dice to determine what happens in the game. When the students land on a "Hula Hoop", the teacher will choose an appropriate hula hoop game for the students. There are many games that can be played, it is up to the teacher to decide which games are appropriate for the students being taught.
Games:
Roll Back: Have 2 students stand at one end of the room, each with a hula hoop. The two students must roll the hoops with a backward spin to see if they can roll the hoop away from themselves, and have the hoop return to them, without them moving to retrieve the hoop. If the students can do this without moving their feet, they are awarded points.
Hoop Snake Relay: One team of students stands in a line holding their hands together to form a "Snake". The hoop is then put on the arm of the lead student. The team snake must then maneuver the hoop all the way down the line by going through the hoop and not letting go of each others hands. This is a timed game, so when the students get the "snake" all the way through the hoop the timer is stopped and the other team then gets a chance to beat that time. The fastest team to get their team through the hoop is the winner and awarded points.
Backwards Basketball: One student from each team has a ball. One student from each team has a hoop. The students are given 30 seconds to see how many times they can throw the ball, with their backs towards their team mate with the hoop, and get the ball in the hoop. The students with the hoops can move in order to get the ball in. After 30 seconds the team with the most baskets is the winner and is awarded points.
Football Punt: One student from each team is given a ball. One student from each team is given a hoop. The hoop students stand at one side of the room with the hoops over their heads. The punters stand at the other side of the room and must try to drop kick the ball through the hoop. The first student to get his/her ball through the hoop is the winner.
*This game is a bit crazy, and kids do get hit with the ball, so I had my strongest bravest boys to hold the hula hoops, and get hit. Pretty funny, and crazy, if the class can play responsibly without breaking things in the classroom.
Hula Dance: Choose 2 students to see who can hoola the longest. The teacher can choose how to play whether its around the waist, as usual, or around the neck, foot, hand, and so on for easier, or more difficult hoola action. The student who performs the longest is then awarded points.
Dive through the Hoop: The teacher rolls the hoop across the floor to another teacher, Or spins it back to him/herself. One student at a time gets a chance to dive through the hoop without interrupting its trajectory.
*This is a lot of fun for younger smaller students if you have a large hula hoop
Crazy Basketball: The teacher stands in the middle of the room with the hoop as if it is a basketball hoop. The teacher spins in circles, stopping, changing directions and moving the hoop higher or lower to the ground. 2 children with 2 balls play against each other to shoot a basket. The first student to get a basket is the winner and is awarded points.
*This is generally a quick and fun game for young students so many children can face off against each other quickly
These are just a few of many games that can be played. Depending on the age of the class, games can be simple, or more team based. Below are some pictures of a few games that we have played this week. Enjoy!
