Games:
Jail Break: Have students get into place for the game as the picture diagram shows. One student from each team is standing on opposite sides of the room. They are the main players trying to free their team from "Jail". The students sitting are "In Jail" and want to get freed by their team mate. The first team to all get "Freed" is the winner. To free a team mate the "Free" player must throw a ball from his/her side of the room to a team mate and the team mate must catch the ball without the ball touching the ground. If the jailed student can catch the ball, they have a chance to try to throw the ball back to the "Free" Standing student. Once the jailed student has caught the ball, and attempted to throw the ball back to the "Free" student, they are out of jail and may return to their seat. If at any point the ball touches the ground, the opposite teams "Free" student gets the ball and the game continues.
With this game both of the "Free" students are moving back and forth on their sides of the classroom trying to pass the ball or block the pass. Students sitting may not move and are only trying to receive the ball, and then if possible return the ball to the "Free" student.
The winning team is awarded 10 points.

Escape: The team that lands on this spot can choose to be the "jailers" or the "escapees". The "Escapees" get to hide one or many small items in the classroom while the other "Jailer" team is outside the classroom and cannot see. When the items (which are the symbolic Escapees) are hidden, the Jailers are let into the classroom and given an allotted amount of time to find the items. If the Jailers find all the items, they are the winners and are awarded 10 points. If the Jailers are unable to find the items, the Escapees are the winners and are awarded 10 points.
*This game is essentially a kind of hide and seek for the classroom *Be sure to lay ground rules of where not to hide items... Such as in peoples pockets, or in the teachers desk... *I allow the students hiding items 30 seconds to hide the items *I allow the Jailers 60-90 seconds to find the items *The pictures of the small turtle and pigs are my examples of what the students are hiding. *I will play first using one item (the turtle), The second time we play (weekend) I will give one item per student for more fun (the pigs). |
Human Knot: This game is fairly simple but needs to be presented carefully before playing. The idea is that all students get in a circle and must hold hands through the middle of the circle. Each student must hold 2 different students hands and only one had holding one hand. (not two hands holding one hand) Once all the students have a mess of tangled inter-crossing hands through the middle of the circle the game can begin. The students must undue the knot without letting go of their hands. Students do this by twisting, turning, stepping over arms, or crawling under arms. I allow my students 1-2 minutes to try to undue the knot. (when completed, all students are standing in a circle holding the hands of the students next to them.
*Many students depending on age may not want to play because its a holding hands game. I am sure to not explain the game until all students realize that this is a very special game, and only my best classes may play. If at any point a student misbehaves, as in speaking Chinese, not standing nicely, or pouting we all sit down and not play. Once they understand that they must be perfect, I have students stand in a circle. I then explain that this game is a special game not for points, but to win money cards. If the whole class works together and are smart enough to win then each student will win a green money card. (hopefully they are very excited at this point) Then I tell them to put their hands in the middle and i connect hands at random to be sure they are tangled well, and are all holding 2 different student's hands. Then I give them the amount of time they have to play and say go! If you want to give them a quick demonstration with the TA feel free. I do this by holding hands crossed with the TA and then simply turn around so my back is to the TA, but our arms/hands are in a circle.
*This game is a lot of fun and can be very difficult depending on how much they are tangled up
