Dice Game: One team will be rolling the dice while the other team will be counting. It is a race to see which team can complete their objective quicker. The rolling team must roll specific numbers. Example, the first student must roll a 1, once he/she has rolled a 1, the next student must roll a 2, once he/she has rolled a 2, the next student must roll a 3 and so on down the line. Children continue to roll until they have rolled their number, then the next student continues. The Counting team must count in sequence to a specific number (I used 10 per student... 5 students, 50... 6 students 60...). If a student counts incorrectly the team must start at 1 and try again. The team that finishes first is the winner.
*Be sure to make sure students are rolling the dice properly
*Listen to the counters, for if they make a mistake, they must start over
*For very young students I let each student try to guess what they would roll, if they were correct they won points (Other game was too confusing)
Kill the Thief Game and Catch the Thief Game: These games involved having a student or teacher blind folded throwing socks. I created 3 games which I would choose to play depending on the class size, or the age of the students. The following are the 3 different versions of the games.
1.) Teacher Vs. Students: The teacher sits in a chair in the middle of the classroom. The teacher will be blindfolded and have all of the sock balls in a container. The students will be walking around the classroom quietly trying not to get hit by a sock ball. This is a QUIET game, be sure that students understand the point of the game is to be silent and the teacher is trying to hear where students are and hit them with socks. If a student is hit directly with a sock ball they are "out" and must sit down. After all the socks have been thrown the teacher counts which team has the most "survivors", this team is the winner and is awarded points. Students are not allowed to hide, lie down or sit on the floor as it could become dangerous for other students quickly moving around.
*Lots of fun, and simple to play. If a class cannot behave and follow directions this game shouldn't be played as the teacher is blindfolded... Or have a teaching assistant be blindfolded so the teacher can assure safe and fun play.
*Children of all ages enjoyed this game
2.) Team Vs. Team: One student from team "A" is blindfolded and sits in a chair in the middle of the room with the sock balls in a container. Team "B" is the target. Team "B" walks around the classroom trying not to get hit by the sock balls. Each player that is hit is worth 10 points. When the blindfolded student has thrown all the socks the game is over and points are tallied... 10 per student hit. Quickly pick up the sock balls, switch teams and have a student from Team "B" be blindfolded trying to hit team "A".
*This game is better for large classes with older students. It takes a little more time as 2 rounds are played, but students should be mature enough to quickly reset the game and play quickly
*This is a Quiet game... If students can not be quiet while not playing they should be put outside the classroom and not be allowed to play a round.
3.) 1 Vs. 1: One student from team "A" is blindfolded. One student from team "B" is the thief. Place an object under the chair that is the thief's goal to steal... I used a squeaky frog toy. The thief must steal the frog toy from under the blindfolded student and make it back to their seat without getting hit by a sock ball. If the thief wins, he/she is awarded points. If the blindfolded student runs out of sock balls the thief has also won by default.... If the thief is going to slow, put a 30 second time limit on the game to get things moving. After the round, have the two students switch and play again.
*This game was fun, but very difficult. Also because most students do not get to play, it wasn't as entertaining as the other 2 games.
All of these games were a lot of fun for the students and the teachers. All ages and class sizes can play.
*Be sure that there are ground rules prior to playing... no hiding under chairs, jumping on chairs, holding or hiding behind people and so on. If a student cannot handle this game then they should not be allowed to play for a few rounds. Enjoy
