Meeting 2 22 2017
Grammar Ideas
Number Buster: The teacher uses flashcards or vocab from the board to say and repeat words, or grammar sentences with the class. If at any point the teacher says a number (Ex. 3), 3 students from each team must race to sit on a line (or touch an object). The first team to do this wins points. This game is a lot of fun as when a number is called most students first reactions are to all jump up to sit on the line. But only the number of students called should sit on the line. This makes the students work together and race back and forth until the correct number of students are on the line, and the rest of the team is sitting nicely in their chairs. (Can also use 2 hula hoops to stand in to make more challenging and funny)
Ball Rebound: Have students from Team A and Team B sit every other person( ABABABABAB). The teacher sits in front of the students with a ball. The teacher makes example sentences for students to repeat. If the teacher makes a mistake students should stand up quickly. The teacher then lobs the ball lightly in the air towards the first student to stand up. The person that catches the ball regardless of team or who stood up first is the winner and earns points. Students then sit down and resume repeating sentences until the next mistake. If too much pushing and shoving, make the student sit out one or two throws, then insert back in.
Hit the Deck: Have students stand in a line in front of the teacher. The teacher will have a ball which is appropriate to throw at students. The teacher will make example sentences with the grammar and have the students repeat after. If the teacher makes a mistake, students should "Hit the Deck", as in sit down or lie on the floor. If a student is last, or too slow, the teacher tries to throw the ball and hit that student. If the student is hit while not in the chair, or on the floor the opposite team is then awarded points.
Conversation game: All the students stand on the line nearest to the board. I say something. Example my friend from USA is visiting. Then the students need to talk about my friend visiting. Each student should say atleast five questions or sentences relating to the topic. What's his name? Why is he here? Can he speak Chinese?? Etc. Then if a student makes a grammar mistake, correct them and make the class repeat it too. They have to say relevant sentences or questions regarding my friend visiting from USA
Guess the question: One student has their back to the board so they cannot see the board. The teacher writes a question on the board. Example: What did you do last night? The other students answer the question: I ate pizza last night. I did my homework last night. Then the student with their back to the board has to guess what the question is.
Horse race: Students sit in a circle. One student has a ball. The teacher stands behind the student with the ball. The teacher says a sentence using the new grammar, students repeat. When the teacher makes a mistake the race begins, the teacher must walk around the circle, the students must pass the ball in a circle. When the students win, the drill is done and they can roll the dice to play a game. The Teacher should try to win, until the drill has gone on for 4-7 minutes, or until students are losing interest.
Duck duck goose grammar: One team sits in a circle and a student from the opposing team stands. The teacher calls out a grammar sentence and the standing student touches the head of one student and all the kids repeat. If a mistake is made by the teacher the student who is standing must sit down before the student they are standing behind can touch them. Faster student gets a point.
Reading Passages
Engage students while, or after reading with talking about what has been read.
How does that relate to their life?
What is there opinion about what has been read?
How do they agree, or disagree with the passage?
As the teacher, you can always be the antagonist, and give your ridiculous opinion in order to get students to disagree with your statements and always push the question of why they disagree.
Raz Reading
Talk about the Book with the Class
If needed, read the book to them in simple terms, using words they understand to help them better grasp the book.
Focus Question, Give a few example answers to the question. Smart, answer, stupid answer, outrageous answer… Then have all students try to come up with their own thoughts.
Can push a debate of agreeing with people, or disagreeing with people in the classroom, and why...
Expanding English: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY…
Everybody Up: Brainstorm
Less Games / Shorter Warm Up / More Grammar: Focus on Grammar, The most important part of the lesson is Grammar. Need to focus 30-45 minutes on grammar, using the new vocab, and also experimenting with other vocab to show the full use of the new grammatical focus. Also Need to review old grammar points, using different tenses from past, present to future, constantly.

Expanding English: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY…
- Show students that the average answer is simple, but if they want to truly speak english beautifully they can be more descriptive in their answers. (EX. I want a banana… ok answer… I want a big yellow banana… better answer… I want a big yellow banana to throw at my teacher… Great answer) *Even with Y level this can be taught to push simple adjectives before the noun in their answers.
- If a student gives an answer that you want all students to repeat. Repeat the students answer but add a more descriptive answer for students to repeat to slowly and subtly improve answers. (EX. Student answer: I ate an apple. Teacher answer: I ate an apple last night, because I was hungry. Students all repeat more descriptive answer…
- After a student has answered a question, or simply said a sentence that was grammar focused, ask the student a follow up question or 2… who, what, where, when, why. Tell students that if the answer is too simple you will be forced to ask follow up questions. If they give a proper answer, then no follow up questions are necessary.
