Number Fun
Ages 8+
This game only requires to write the numbers 1-15 on the board. (If there are more than 15 students in the class write up to the number of students plus a few.) Students stand in a circle to play this game. The teacher starts the count at 1 and students go around counting in a circle. When the class counts to the last number they have won that round. The student that said the last number then creates a "Rule" for one of the numbers. The teacher then circles that number on the board so that all know there is a rule for that number.
To start the game I usually circle one of the numbers and create a rule to start and show how the game will be played.
Example: 7 is dance like a chicken (no speaking)
Students then go around counting... 1,2,3,4,5,6, Dance like a chicken,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15... Make a second rule
Rule 2: 12 is sing "I'm a little teapot short and stout"
Students then go around counting... 1,2,3,4,5,6, Dance like a chicken,8,9,10,11, "I'm a little Teapot short and stout", 13,14,15... Make a 3rd rule...
After each English drill I will have the class play two rounds of losing. The student that makes a mistake in the game must give the opposite team 5 points.
The first few rounds are easy, but once there are 4-5 rules, it starts getting confusing.
*To change difficulty, write symbols or descriptions of the rules next to the numbers, or don't write anything on the board at all.
Examples of some rules (easy and silly to difficult and involving English)
1.) Sing a short part of a song
2.) Change 7 to say 6
3.) Dance in some crazy way
4.) Say something embarrassing in English... (I kissed a pig last night) (I love Teacher Candice)
5.) Don't say the number, look at the next person in the circle
6.) Don't say the number, touch your nose
7.) Run around the circle
8.) Do a push-up
9.) Spell the number chosen
10.) Ask the next student a question
