World Cup
Required:
2 balls, soccer goal ( two chairs or Markers)
Icons:
World Cup: Play Game (25 points to winner)
1 vs. 1: Play Game (10 points to winner)
Yellow Card: Draw a yellow card under that teams name. ( two yellow cards = red card)
Red Card: Erase that teams points.
+ 10: Add 10 points to that team.
+100: Add 100 points to that team.
? : Choose any spot on the board game.
Students will roll a dice to move the game piece around the board to determine what happens.
Games: To be played when it is landed on in the board game.
World Cup: There is a large Soccer Goal located on one side of the class room where the teacher is the goalie. The object of the game is for students to score a goal before the rest of the students and then run to their seats. The last person to score, or sit down is out and does not make it to the next round. For beginning rounds 2 balls are used as many students are playing, when the rounds get down to only a few students then use one ball. Depending on your classes this game can be done as a free for all, as each student independently tries to score and then run to sit down before others. Also it can be played in Pairs, after one of the students scores both of the students run to sit down so they must tell their teammate that they scored. Obviously this game depends on the number of students and the size of the classroom and age of kids. I find its ok for 10 young children to play in pairs, and for older kids to play individually. For my class of 15 big kids I play first round all girls play then the next time world cup is hit boys play. This game is played until there is one winner, or until one team has no more people that made it to the next round of play. I am awarding 25 points to the winner. This game obviously is wild, and the second it is getting out of control should be stopped. Make clear rules of no pushing prior to play and also be sure not to make poor choices of who can play. (I wouldn't advise putting a 14 year old boy that is the size of the teacher in a game with girls that weigh 50 pounds) If played safely and correctly this is quite the fun game for all.
1 vs. 1: This game is the same but in a finals style. The goal is set up in the same fashion with the teacher as the goalie. One student from each team is chosen to play. One ball is used as its only two children. The first student to score is awarded 10 points. As this is a quick game you can play a few rounds of this if time permits. If a round is taking too long just count down from 5 and say its a tie with no winner and choose 2 others to play. (Could also be 2 vs. 2 if depending on class conditions)
Drills: To be used without Board Game
World Cup: Each student in the class must effectively complete the drill in order to play. Such as each student saying a specific grammar sentence, then having the class all repeat that students example together. When each student has clearly and loudly made their own example, and also participated in repeating all of the other students example sentences then everyone is allowed to have fun and play world cup. (Can be used at the end of any lengthy teaching part, Vocab, QnA, Reading, Review...)
1 vs. 1: During your drills choose 4 children as you go that stand out. (either repeating loudly and clearly with the teacher, or those that can do the drill alone) Have the 2 from the same team do paper scissor stone to decide who will get to play, the winners of paper scissor stone then play 1 vs 1. This is a fast game, so it can be used quickly and often to keep pushing kids to behave and pay attention so that maybe they will be next to play.
Comments: This board game is a lot of fun and can be used with many ages as long as its played safely. The yellow cards and red card come up often, but its quite funny to act like a soccer ref, blow a fake whistle and show them an imaginary card. Since it happens often many kids get yellow cards, and often lose all their points, but just made the game more unique and soccer themed. If children can't handle losing points for some reason, don't use as many yellow cards. (But good lesson learned that you get knocked down a lot in this board game, you just got to keep playing)
