Roll the dice to decide which Card Battle to play. All games involve 2 - all students and are fast and fun.
Games:
1.) Card Race: This game can be played with as many students as classroom space permits. Each student gets a poker card placed on their head. When the teacher says "GO" the race begins. I had students race from a seated position, to the board, and then back to their seats. The first student to complete this without the card falling off their head is the winner.
*If a card falls off their head students can either return to the start of the race to try again ( 1 VS 1), or they lose and are out of the game (Entire class racing).
2.) Blow Race: This game can be played with as many students as classroom space permits. Place a poker card on the floor along a line in the classroom. Each student playing gets one card. Students must race to blow a poker card across the floor to a finish line. ( I used center line of class to the wall with 4-8 students playing at a time)
Depending on the class this can be won in a few different ways...
A.) Older students: The last student to get to the the wall is the loser and the other team wins (Assuming many children are playing)
B.) Younger students: The first student to get to the the wall is the winner
3.) 52 Card Pickup: Throw cards all around the classroom floor in a spread out manner. When the teacher says "GO" all students race to pick up as many cards as possible. Once all cards have been picked up students return to their seats and count how many cards they have.
A.) Older students: The team with the most cards wins
B.) Younger students: The student with the most cards wins
*Be sure to tell students that if a someone is touching a card they may not steal the card from that student
4.) Card Throw: Each student gets 2-3 poker cards. Each student stands about 4-6 feet from the board. If a student can throw a card and hit the board, they are awarded points.
*This game is fast and amusing to see students try their hardest and the cards go no where. I gave students a few tries each to work on different techniques
5.) Card Tag: 1 student from each team play at a time. Place 2 objects in the room (Chairs) for students to race around. Each student has a poker card on their head and starts at opposite sides (Next to chairs). When the teachers says "GO" students race around in a circle trying to tag the other student. If the poker card falls off their head during the race that student loses.
*For older students, a code word can be implemented that indicates students to switch directions... (Switch... Monkey...)
*I also allowed older students to pick up their cards and put them back on their heads if it fell off and made the racing area around 4 objects. (larger race area)
6.) Card Categories: This game is very similar to musical chairs. The teacher places poker cards in a circle on the floor (# of students -1). Students will then march in a circle around the cards. The teacher will choose a category and say vocab that goes with the category. Students repeat together after the teacher. When the teacher says a word that is not in the category students must place their hand on top of a poker card. The student that does not get their hand on a card must give the other team 5 points. As this was a great teaching game, I played a few rounds of this game each time it was hit. *Note all students play every round in this game. Don't take cards away as with musical chairs.
