Second Hand Bike Negotiation
Print the roles given below and give students their roles of buyer and seller. The information in the roles is a secret and not to be told to the other student.
Prior to trying the simple negotiation make sure you go through a simple example negotiation on a different topic.
EX buying and selling a second hand car with another teacher or student. Give them ideas of how they can negotiate in order to get a better price.
Teach Buyers that they should talk about why the item should be cheaper... Things they don't like about the item, or other options that are better...
Teach sellers that they should talk about why the item should be more expensive... things that are special about the item...
Buyer: Your parents have given you $600 to buy a bike for your birthday. The bike that you want is $1000. You found a second hand bike that is really great, but it is not the color you want... Painting the bike costs $50 dollars. Negotiate to try and buy the bike at the best price possible...
*Start with a very low price... and try to get to the price you really want!!!
Seller: Your parents just gave you a new bike and you don't need your old bike anymore. The bike cost $600 new... Other second hand bikes like yours cost $200... But you want to buy a new helmet that costs $300 with the money from selling your bike. Try to sell your bike for the highest price possible.

Winners sell or buy their bikes between $300 and $550
After the Negotiation have students give their prices. Tally the prices for each group and see who the winners are...
