Fish in a Barrel
Required: Balloons, Bucket, Dice (Balloons and Bucket can be substituted for other items)
Icons:
+5: Add 5 points to that team
Purple Barrel: Student picks out a balloon from the bucket and is rewarded with points or a game
Red Fish Hook: Lose your turn
Go Fish: Big Fish in a Barrel Game
Students roll the dice until they either land on a fish hook (In which case they lose) or until they get to the end of the game and play the Big Fish in a Barrel Game. The board game setup that I made was not optimal, as depending on the class, students often died, or played the big game too much. Children really enjoyed the big game, which is why I am adding this to the website, But other board game setups could be done better.
Set Up: I used 25 balloons of different colors to draw different things on the back side of the balloons (as shown in the picture). I drew fish, with different points on each one, sharks, math problems and letters. The Fish and Sharks were positive in that they earned points / the Math Problems and Letters were negative in that they wasted time for students and this was a fast paced game. For this reason I made more sharks and fish than the Latter. But the amusing part of the game was the fact that there were a good amount of negative balloons out there to mess with the students.
Games:
Purple Barrel: The student that rolled the dice gets to choose 1 balloon from the bucket. If they choose a fish or a shark they are awarded points. If they choose a letter we played a word game. If a Math Problem was chosen we played a math game.
Word game A: Which team can make the most words that start with the letter chosen in 2 minutes. (must say, or write)
Word Game B: Sit in a circle saying words that start with the letter chosen. The first student to repeat a word, be too slow, or make a mistake loses.
*The winning team was awarded 25 points
Math Game A: The teacher says a Math Problem, the first student to answer is the winner and safe. Continue to say math problems until there is only one student left that is the loser. The opposite team is awarded 25 points.
Math Game B: Students sit in a circle and must count by 2's or 3's. If a student makes a mistake they are "Out". Play until only one student is left. The winner is awarded 25 points.
Go Fish: (Picture below)
The teacher lays all balloons on the floor face down. Students want to collect as many balloons as possible in order to win more points from finding fish or sharks. One student from each team runs out at a time to pick up one balloon. If the students pick up a "point balloon" then they run back to their seat, give the next student from their team a "High five", then it is that students turn to pick out a balloon and so on. If a student picks up a math problem they must run to the green X on the floor and do that amount of jumping jacks counting loudly as they go (6+6= ? 12 jumping jacks...). When they finish then they "high five" the next student on their team. If a letter is picked up the student must run to the green X and do jumping jacks saying the alphabet up to the letter they picked up. When they finish, they "high five" the next student on their team and the game continues. When all fish have been picked up the game ends. Each team counts how many points they have, and add it to the board.
*This game takes a minute to set up and is a little confusing the first try, but once they see the teachers do an example run then it is pretty easy to understand. Also the fact that it is very different than most games, children got a kick out of it. Students were overjoyed to find one of the 3 sharks for 25 points. Children also laughed reluctantly every time they had to do jumping jacks and yell the ABC's or count.
*This game was geared towards 8-12 year old's, but because there are fish, sharks, letters, and numbers to pick up this can easily be turned into a simpler game for very young children.
This game can be played many different ways, but the concept of drawing on balloons, and having positive and negative things drawn on the undersides was worth putting up as an idea to play with.
All my classes really enjoyed playing!

All my classes really enjoyed playing!
These two girls are on different teams. I put 2 green X's on the floor in tape for them to do jumping jacks on. The girl on the left was counting to 12, the girl on the right was about to start her ABC's to "Mm". The other balloons are laid out across the floor face down in the picture as this was taken early in the game. All other students are sitting on the bench next to me waiting to get tagged in to grab a balloon.
