Example Lesson Plan
This is a simple example of how you can use this website to make an exciting lesson plan for your classes each week! These are all Copied from other pages on this website. The "teachers notebook" has lots of great ideas of teaching drills for vocabulary and grammar. The "Extra Help" section has many specific types of drills and games for different areas of teaching. The "Young learners" area has tons of great ideas for very young learners. Obviously "Board Games" are ideas for some fun in the classroom and there are almost 100 different games!!!
Board Game: Super Tick Tack Toe
Numbers: Closest Number to the Impossible Question: The teacher writes or tells the students a crazy question that students must guess the numeric answer. Each students gets one guess in order and the teacher writes down the answers. After all the students have guessed the teacher reveals the answer and the closest number to the answer is the winner. Example questions: How many monkeys live with me? (Easy small number) How many people live in my home town? (difficult large number) Every few guesses or if a student's pronunciation is poor the teacher should repeat the number and have all students repeat the number together. This Drill is only truly effective when all students repeat numbers together after the teacher!
Teacher Says: True/False: True statements that the teacher makes students should repeat and act out. Ex. I like to eat ice-cream, I can jump, I am a boy...
False statements students should not repeat and should run to sit in their chairs or on the floor. Ex. I like to kiss elephants, I can fly, I am a dolphin...
If students are too slow or make a mistake, the other team can win points.
Vocabulary: Bomb a Word
For younger students it’s best to use flashcards. Start with three flashcards on the floor and use any object in the classroom as the “bomb”. Tell the students that when you point to a card and say the word they must repeat it. But place the bomb on one of the words and tell the students that if you say this word, they must stay silent and not repeat. If someone says the word, they blow up and the other team gets a point. Then add a card every time someone blows up or whenever you feel one can be added.
For older students, write the target vocabulary on the board instead of using flashcards. Use a magnet as the bomb but play the same way as with younger students.
This game has lots of variations instead of having the student blow up. Another variation is the name game. If a student makes a mistake, you give them a new and funny name like “Monkey Bottom” until the game is over.
Grammar: Clap Kill: Each team sits on the floor in two lines sitting across from each other. The teacher says sentences using the grammar of the day. If the teacher makes a mistake students must clap and then use their hands to make a gun pointed at a student from the other team. The fastest student gets a chance to correct the sentence. If the sentence is said correctly by the student then he/she gets to kill one student from the other team. (That student is then "OUT" and sits in their chair) The first team to eliminate all students from the other team is the winner.
*Even if a student is "OUT" they must continue to repeat after the teacher.
*If a student is not repeating after the teacher, the teacher must point out that someone is not talking, and have all students repeat the same sentence again.
*Be sure to make mistakes concerning the specific grammar concept that is being taught.
*Mistakes should be made every 2-4 sentences so that students have a chance to repeat many sentences correctly.
Question and Answer: Spin The Bottle
Use the bottle to ask each student questions. The teacher spins the bottle and asks the student it points to a question. First ask basic warm-up questions and then move on to target structures or review structures.
Reading: Musical Chairs: The teacher reads and has students repeat. When the teacher makes a mistake students must switch seats. (any seat near or far) The slowest person is "out and sits next to the opposite wall. Students that are out must continue to read after the teacher, for if they don't they risk sending another person from their team out of the game for their lack of reading. Also the class must read the sentence again without any mistakes which then just makes a fun game take longer to get to the fun part of mistakes and switching chairs. Continue the game until there is a single student winner. Award points, money cards, or board game. Then start the drill again, play until the reading is completed.
Review Flash Cards: Fastest/Loudest: Go through the cards without saying them, only showing them. Every 5-7 cards choose a student that was the fastest or loudest to be the winner and be "Out" of the drill or to earn points for their team. * Whenever a word comes up that they are confused on stop and say it clearly for your students so they can repeat then continue. This also helps the teacher to see how well the students know the flashcards as the teacher does not say the cards only sees how quick and well the students know the cards.
