Mine Sweeper and Land Mines
Required: 8-10 bowling pins, 2 balls
Board Game: The teacher chooses a spot on the grid to be the "Mine" (does not write it on the board). Students guess where the "Mine" is using the grid letters and numbers. (A-1, B-4, C-5) When a student guesses a spot on the grid the teacher will write a number on that spot showing how many spaces away it is from the "Mine". Example from picture (D-2 the teacher writes a 1, because it is one spot away from the "Mine". Example 2 from picture (A-5 the teacher writes a 5 on that spot showing it is 5 spaces away from the "Mine". Example 3 (E-4 the teacher writes a 2 on that spot showing it is 2 spaces away from the "Mine". Students continue to guess until the "Mine" is found. The team that finds the "Mine" wins 25 points.
After a "Mine" is found the class gets to play a "Land Mine" relay race of the teachers choice.
Land Mine relay Races: Teams will play relay races by winding around the pins in figure 8's. Each team has a line of pins that they will use in the races. When the first student from each team finishes, the next student from each team instantly begins. The team to complete the relay race first wins 10 points. If during the relay races a student should knock over a pin, the student must pick up the pin, and start over.
Types of Relay Races: Soccer dribbling, basketball dribbling, crawling, running backwards, crab walk, snake.
*Snake is where each team locks their arms together or hold hands to create a team "Snake". The snake must run connected winding through the pins and return to their seats as a snake without knocking over a pin. If the team knocks over a pin they must start again.
*During class have the pins set up on the floor and make a rule that if any student knocks over a pin at any time during "teaching" then that team loses 5 points. This makes the games go quicker, (don't have to set up pins constantly) also this keeps the students on their toes throughout the entire class.
*After each Mine Sweeper game erase the numbers on the grid, and choose a new spot for a "Mine". This game is fun and easy and should be played many times during class, after which each "win" is followed by a relay race.
*Choose appropriate styles of relay races for the age of the class.
