Poker Card Races
Required: 2 stools, 2 balls, poker cards
After each English Drill, Choose one student from each team to come to the table in front of the classroom (As in the picture). The teacher will flip over a poker card, Depending on what turns over the 2 students will quickly look at the board to figure out what game it is, and compete. The student to finish the competition first and sit nicely in their seat is the winner. These games are all fast and fun, I would have a few students pick a card between each drill, Or use this game within drills to break up the monotony.
*Be sure to quickly demonstrate each game at the beginning of class
* If a Class is super young, just show the game you want to play, and say if a face card comes up slap it for points, if a number card comes up, race to play the game that many times. Each time show a different game and then play again.
Games:
A: Team Basketball: If an "Ace" card is turned up, each student from both teams must shoot the ball from behind a line into their stool (Hoop). One at a time students shoot until the ball stays in, then another student plays. When one team all makes a basket and sits nicely they are the winners and are awarded 5 points.
*Feel free to let teams help each other out and get the rebounds for their teammate shooting, so the game goes faster, and more children get to participate as a team.
JQK (Face Cards): Slap Card: If a "Face Card" is turned students must race to slap the card with their hand. The first student to hit the card is the winner and is awarded 2 points. (Face cards are any card with a face, Jack, Queen, King... and Joker if you want)
Club #: Toe Touches: If a club card is turned students must see what number it is, then do that amount of "Toe Touches" on their ball in the stool. A toe touch is when you place your foot on top of the ball delicately as in stopping a ball in football (Soccer). Students switch feet counting loudly each toe touch until they reach the number on the card (2-10), Then race back to their seat. The first student to sit nicely is the winner and is awarded 2 points.
*Be sure to tell students to count loudly or they do not win and must play again!
Diamond #: Run around Chairs: If a diamond card is turned students must see what number it is, then run around their chair that amount of times. Students must count loudly running around their chair then race to sit down. The first student to get back to their seat first is the winner and is awarded 2 points.
*Be sure to tell students to count loudly or they do not win and must play again!
*Students can run backwards to make it more difficult
Spade #: BBall Dribble: If a spade card is turned students must see what number it is, then dribble the ball like a basketball that many times in a row. Students must count loudly while they dribble. When finished put the ball back in the stool, and sit in their seat. The winner is awarded 2 points.
*students must count loudly, and do the full amount of dribbles without fumbling the ball, or start over.
Heart #: Sit Chair: If a heart card is turned students must see what number it is, then go from their original seat, to the stool and sit on the stool that many times. Students will race from their seat, to the stool, sit down, Count "1", then race to their seat, and back to the stool, sit down, count "2"... and so on, until the number from the card is finished (2-10). The student to complete this first is the winner and is awarded 2 points.
*I never made a rule that the chair could not be moved, some classes were savvy enough to move the chairs next to their seats, some raced back and forth. Either way lots of fun.
*Students must count loudly, or start again.
All these games are easy, fast, and fun. Lots of children get to compete and the teacher can choose to keep switching competitors, or have students of the same athletic ability play against each other throughout class.
