?: Choose Which Game or Contest to Play
Students throw a bean bag at the tic tac toe grid on the floor to see which game or contest they will be playing(red grid taped on the floor). The team that wins the game or contest wins that spot on the grid and gets the "Mark" of an "X" or an "O". If a team can get 3 "X's" or 3 "O's" in a row they are the winners. As this is also a shuffle board theme, I allowed students to play for the same spot multiple times and try to knock off the other team to steal the spot on the tic tac toe grid.
Points can be awarded for winning spaces on the tic tac toe grid, or for winning the game of tic tac toe.
To Mark which team has won which spots on the tic tac toe game, I drew a small grid above the board game. After a team had won, I would simply erase the small grid and draw a new one.
Games and Contests:
Shuffle Board: The teacher designates a spot for children to throw bean bags from. Each student then gets to throw one bean bag at the shuffle board grid to try and earn points. (The Black and Yellow shuffle board picture with points from 10-5-2) The team that has earned the most points wins the tic tac toe space. EX one team has 5 students they shoot 2,2,5,5,10 = 24 points Other team shoots 0,5,5,10,10=30 points; 30 point team wins the space of an "X" or an "O".
Kill Pin: Each student gets to throw a bean bag at a pin on the other side of the room. The Team that knocks it down more times is the winner. The winner is awarded the space on the tic tac toe grid.
Closest to Wall: Each student gets to throw a bean bag at the wall on the opposite side of the classroom from their chairs. The student who lands closest to the wall without touching the wall wins. The winner is awarded the space on the tic tac toe grid.
Categories 1 vs. 1: Students make 2 lines (the two teams). The teacher will then say a category such as colors. The first student to say a color is the winner and may sit down. The loser must go to the end of his/her team's line to play again. The first team to all win and sit down are the winners. The winner is awarded the space on the tic tac toe grid.
*Categories can be easy such as colors, days of the week, animals, food, fruit...
*Categories can be difficult such as a country that is rich, something in your bathroom, someone you think is famous…
Spelling Bee: Each student is given a word to spell. If he/she is correct, they stay in the game. If he/she is incorrect, they are out. The last person standing is the winner and is awarded the space on the tic tac toe grid.
*If there are too many students you can also do a quicker 1 vs. 1 scenario.
True or False Q n A: This can be simple or difficult depending on the class. True or False can be played where the teacher makes a statement and students must answer if it is a true statement or a false statement. If students are correct, they continue to play, if wrong they are "OUT". Last student standing is the winner.
Also this can be a good way to practice the current class questions/ grammar, or to review old questions and grammar. Same fashion, if the student is correct they continue to play, if wrong they are out. Last student standing is the winner. The winner is awarded the space on the tic tac toe grid.
Numbers: This can be any type of number game. The winner is awarded the space on the tic tac toe grid. Ex. Guess a number between 0 -???. Math Problems. Guess a Date. Guess the number of monkeys in America (teacher just makes up a number, each student guesses, the closest number to the teacher's is the winner)
?: Students can choose whichever game or contest they wish to play to win the center square. If students are older and witty, maybe they would like an english contest. If students are very young and active, maybe they would like to play "kill the pin" or "shuffle board".
*Obviously this game can have many variations of games and contests. I made this a mix of english contests and active games because my classes vary from 8-14 year old children. Shuffle Board takes time to make and is enjoyed by all students, so this could be put on more spaces of the tic tac toe grid. I put some other bean bag games up for the sake of variety.
*To make this tic tac toe game a bit different I allowed stealing of tic tac toe spaces. Meaning that if a team has the center square, the other team can try to land on the center square again to play a game or contest to steal that space. Obviously it can be played without this option of stealing.
