Ultimate English Game
This is my permanent board/window game for all of my older classes. Students can throw a ball at the window to decide which game will be played (Or roll a dice to move a playing piece around the spaces). Each game has some sort of educational aspect to it, so even though they are games, they practice some form of English, Whether it be reading, writing, spelling, speaking, listening, drawing, or numbers.
The games described below work on the basis that winning the games, or drills during class will award their team points; the team with the most points at the end of class has won the day. Their teams have been chosen by the teacher, and they will work with the same team competing until one team has won 7 classes and is awarded a prize. (Once a week class) After that time, teams will change, and we will start our competition over. |
*In order starting Top Left , moving Clockwise...
Apples to Apples: 2 Styles for different class sizes
A.) Large class: Write a partial sentence on the board using the new grammar, or review grammar.
EX. In the Future China will... Last night I saw...
Each student gets a small piece of paper that should be prepared prior to class. Each student must complete the sentence on their paper and place it in a stack for their team. After this the teacher, or a student from the opposing team reads the cards one by one, and must try to guess which student from the opposite team has written it. If the student guesses correctly, they have won a point. Can have one student from each team guessing the other team's stack, or have each student guess once.
B.) Small Class: Same as above... Write a partial sentence on the board using the new grammar, or review grammar.
EX. In the Future China will... Last night I saw... Each student gets a small piece of paper that should be prepared prior to class. Each student must complete the sentence on their paper and then hand it in to the teacher. The teacher will read the cards out loud to the class and then judge the answers and choose the smartest, and/or funniest answers to win points.
*This takes a couple minutes but is really funny and incorporates the grammar, writing, reading, and listening. Also pushes students to write creatively!
Scrabble: Write 8 - 10 letters on the board. Give each team one sheet of paper. Students must use the letters to write as many words as possible to win points. Points are also awarded to the longest word written. Depending on the class I allow letters to be used more than once to make it less difficult. After 3 minutes stop and tally the words to see which team has won...
Ex. A E I P L T C H D
Cat (Use letters once)
Cattle (Use letters more than once)
Pictionary: One student from each team is chosen to draw something on the board. Other students must guess what it is. If they can guess, they win points.
Can play with 2 teams playing at the same time, or alternate with a time limit.
Can make more difficult with using their weak hand, or blindfolded...
*I use different words for each team at the same time... but in the same category and difficulty level...
(Bird/ Frog) (Phone/ Radio) (Police car/ Ambulance)
Relay Writing: This is a relay race of writing a sentence on the board. Each team is given a marker. The teacher tells the class a long sentence (Using current or review grammar concept), and then the race begins. Each student may only write one word, then race back to their chair and give the next student the marker to run to the board and write a word... The first team to write the sentence correctly wins. If the students finish and their is a mistake, I usually just say which word is incorrect, or say the sentence again, but the race continues until one team has the sentence written correctly.
*Only one student from each team has a marker and can be out of their seat at a time.... Not many kids jumping around and helping...
*I usually choose a very long sentence so everyone can write atleast one word. This also gets kids repeating the sentence over and over again so they dont forget. They also must work as a team to get correct spelling, and punctuation...
Lots of fun!
Charades: One student from each team must act out a word for their team... the team that guesses the answer wins...
OR!!!
Reverse Charades seems much better for older students. One student from each team is guessing, while the rest of the teams are doing the actions for the word. This gets students to be a bit less shy, or at least some of the more active students get into it!
Bizz5 Buzz7: This game students stand or sit in a circle alternating teams... Teams A, B... Sit ABABAB...
Students are counting consecutively and quickly until someone makes a mistake. When a student makes a mistake the other team wins a point. Play as many times as time permits.
Biz= multiples of 5... don't say 5's say bizz (5, 10, 15, 20, 25...)
Buzz = multiples of 7... Don't say 7's, say buzz ( 7, 14, 21, 28, ...)
Each time Bizz or Buzz is said the direction of speaking changes...
Ex... 1,2,3,4, Bizz (switch directions of next speaker) 6, Buzz (Switch directions of the next speaker), 8,9, Bizz, 11,12, 13,Buzz, Bizz...
*Really difficult at the beginning, but lots of fun and fast! Teams can win points quickly in just a few minutes of play.
3 Word: This game students stand or sit in a circle alternating teams... Teams A, B... Sit ABABAB...
Students must say 3 word sentences while either looking to the person on their right, or on their left. Students may say the same 3 letter sentence if they turn to look at the next person. Students must say a different 3 letter sentence if they want to go back and change directions.
Example
A B C D are students
A says "how are you" and looks at B
B says "how are you" and looks at C
C says "I am fine" and looks at B
B says "you are crazy" and looks at C
C says "you are crazy" and looks at D
***If a student is too slow, looks the wrong way, or says a bad sentence they have lost. The opposing team wins a point.
*Very fast and funny. Students learn quickly that funny, or embarrassing sentences make the game interesting...
(I'm a girl... don't kiss me... who's your girlfriend... where's your girlfriend...)
Catch Phrase: One student from each team is given a word to explain to their team. Their teammates must guess what the word is. The fastest team to guess the word is the winner.
*As this could get loud, you can make different rules such as the speaker gives a marker to the person that guesses correctly then they race to the board to write the answer....
The speaker points to the person that guessed correctly and they must race to the teacher, for a high five and say the answer....
Fast and fun... Be sure that students understand they cannot say the word, spell the word, or act out the word in any way.... Only describing the word using their spoken words.
*I use different words for each team... but in the same category and difficulty level...
such as (shark/ lion) (Germany/ Brazil) (Hat / Sock)
Star: Choose any Game... I also have some other games that I write on the side of the window that students can choose from. In this way I can always add games that students enjoy.
